Norway-based AI and robotics company 1x Technologies launched NEO Gamma, a humanoid robot, particularly for home environments. It is a successor of the NEO Beta, which was released in Aug 2024 by the same company. This development marks a significant breakthrough in the robotics industry.
This new humanoid robot is still in the prototype phase but can perform various tasks, such as serving coffee, making laundry, and vacuuming. Besides this, the design of the humanoid robot is inspired by everyday domestic life, aiming to mix well with the living spaces.
The company further stated that the bipedal robot is ready to be launched soon, with limited in-home testing, despite the fact that the NEO Gamma is far away from commercial scaling and deployment.
NEO Gamma shines brighter due to its minimalistic design, featuring a nylon suit and a simple yet effective appearance. This new robot can reduce potential injuries due to the robot-to-human contract.
It is not the first humanoid robot, and it faces solid competition from some of the other well-known robots. But before we look into that, let’s look at some unique features of NEO Gamma.
Key Features of NEO Gamma
Multipurpose Whole Body Controller: The robot possesses the ability to walk with a natural gait, swing its arms, and perform tasks, such as squatting and sitting, without much hindrance. All of this is possible via reinforcement learning from human motion capture data.
General Purpose Object Handling: It can easily pick up and interact with multiple objects in different scenarios due to its AI-trained manipulation model.
Emotive Ear Rings: The humanoid robot’s emotive earrings offer real-time feedback in a highly intuitive and interactive experience.
Home Safe Design: It comprises a soft-knit suit and a tender-driven joint actuation, which ensures safety and reduces the risk of accidents in home-based environments.
Home-Focused Adaptability: Compared to various industrial robots, NEO Gamma is particularly designed for domestic spaces, understanding how to close & open doors, furniture, and daily life challenges.
The Race for Humanoid Domination
1X is not the first company working towards building humanoid robots. Various companies such as Agility Robotics, Boston Dynamics, Apptronik, and Figure have started working towards robotics development. However, most of these firms heavily emphasize building industrial applications for warehouses and factories.
Boston Dynamics has built an Atlas robot that can twist arms and legs up to 180 degrees on the floor, which is not possible for humans. Figure, a well-known robotics company, has created a humanoid robot that can perform exceptionally in simulated home environments. On the other hand, 1X’s decision to emphasize household applications from the outset is most effective in the robotics industry.
Prioritizing Safety and User-Friendly Design
Knowing the value of safety in domestic settings, 1x has integrated several features to ensure that NEO Gamma is safe and user-friendly. The robot’s joints are closed with covers to decrease the risk of injuries during interactions.
In addition, operational noises have been brought back to the level of household appliances, ensuring the Gamma’s presence is restrained.
To ensure better safety, 1X has even incorporated teleoperation abilities into the NEO Gamma to deal with safety issues. However, full autonomy is the final goal; the possibility of humans remotely controlling the robot needs an added layer of attention.
The design even focuses on approachability. The head of the robot is enough to provide more comfort and familiarity, targeting to keep users calm in its presence. This careful design of the robot works well in households with children and the elderly and even brings a wave of trust and reliability.
The AI Factor: How NEO Gamma is Getting Smarter
Generative AI plays one of the most important roles in transforming humanoid robots into intuitive and lifelike, especially for boosting human-to-robot interaction. 1X is building its own AI models to improve speech and body language so that the humanoid robot can interact easily with humans.
As of now, there is no absolute clarity about where the NEO Gamma’s improvement came from. Is it because of 1X’s collaboration with OpenAI or the recent acquisition with Kind Humanoid? This indicates that 1X is working on developing robots that perform tasks at scale and communicate effectively. AI-based enhancements force the robots to adapt to the home environments and address users’ queries with better contextual understanding and emotional awareness.
The Road Ahead for Humanoid Robots
Even though humanoid robots are marching to the next level, there have been constant issues linked with pricing, reliability, safety, and functionality before bringing them home. 1X hasn’t yet stated how many NEO Gamma they have made, and also, current demonstrations just serve as proof of concept and not mass-market readiness. The vision of humanoid robots is gearing up, with more and more companies working towards it. NEO Gamma is taking a leap forward and promising a better future.
