OpenAI, Oracle & SoftBank Drive New Stargate AI Data Centers

OpenAI has collaborated with Oracle and Softbank to build next-generation AI infrastructure. This partnership combines OpenAI’s AI innovation with Oracle’s cloud expertise and Softbank’s financial power. Together, the three are joining hands to launch one of the most innovative and ambitious projects in the AI world. 

The primary purpose of this project is to construct five new Stargate data centers across the United States. Oracle will construct three sites in Shackelford County, Texas, Doña Ana County, New Mexico, and an undisclosed location in the Midwest. Softbank will develop the remaining two sites in Lordstown, Ohio, and the other in Milam County, Texas.

These new data centers will expand Stargate’s planned capacity to roughly 7 gigawatts, equivalent to supplying power to 5 million homes. Moreover, the project is part of a $500 billion program designed to speed up the development of AI systems beyond limits. Each center will possess the most advanced computing structure suitable for building and training AI models. 

The purpose here is not just power but sustainability, too. Compared to traditional cloud systems, these data centers will be built using top-notch hardware, energy-saving designs, and custom architectures to fine-tune the AI workload. OpenAI views this as a break from outdated infrastructure, creating purpose-built systems for frontier models. 

Just after this official announcement, there was a separate landmark agreement in which Nvidia agreed to supply chips and related hardware worth $100 billion. OpenAI also stated that five sites, along with Abilene and other projects, will take Stargate to around 7 GW of planned capacity and over $400 billion in investment over the next three years, with a long-term goal of 10 GW and roughly $500 billion. 

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, “AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it. That compute is the key to ensuring everyone can benefit from AI and unlocking future breakthroughs.” His message reflected OpenAI’s vision to meet rising demand with reliability while safeguarding growth.

Clay Magouyrk, Oracle’s CEO, stated, “The company will continue to expand OCI’s footprint at an unrivaled pace to deliver the most performant and cost-effective AI training and inferencing.” This will build an AI infrastructure to help OpenAI rapidly scale its business.

Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, backed the project’s strategy with investment depth. He stated, “Stargate is harnessing SoftBank’s innovative data center design and energy expertise to deliver the scalable compute that powers AI’s future.” 

Community groups and local officials have raised questions about energy use, carbon footprint, grid strain, and consolidation of AI power. Moreover, there are questions about transparency, accountability, and permitting timelines as the project grows quickly. OpenAI, however, insists the expansion is necessary to meet global demand sustainably and responsibly.

These new data centers will have significant geopolitical and economic weight in the US. They will create a strategic AI infrastructure domestically while reinforcing the country’s leadership in emerging technologies. An OpenAI spokesperson said, “This move strengthens America’s position in the global AI race.”

The push shows that AI’s future depends as much on computing infrastructure as on algorithm breakthroughs. OpenAI’s Stargate centers are designed as more than data hubs. They are the backbone of a new era in intelligent computing.
