Gemini AI Is About to Change the Way You Watch TV

Jay Shah

The age of talking to your television has officially arrived, and it’s about to get interesting. Google just announced that its powerful Gemini AI assistant is moving from smartphones to smart TVs. It promises to transform the humble living room screen into an intelligent conversational partner that can do more than help you find something to binge-watch.

Starting with some TCL models, Gemini for Google TV is one of the boldest AI rollouts ever in consumer tech. With over 300 million active Google TV and Android TV OS devices worldwide, this is the most significant deployment of conversational AI into U.S. households.

Of course, Gemini can resolve those age-old family arguments over what to watch. Picture asking, “Hey Google, find something that action movie lovers and rom-com enthusiasts would like,” and receiving practical recommendations rather than searching forever through Netflix genres.

The AI can bring you up to speed on past seasons of your favourite shows, remind you of that movie with “the guy from that thing,” and even access reviews to aid you in deciding whether or not the new superhero blockbuster is worth your Friday evening.

But this is where things get interesting: since it’s the complete Gemini experience, your living room TV will now be the smartest thing in your home.

It’s a Sunday evening, and your family surrounds the living room. Your teenager requests Gemini assistance with a history assignment on World War II, and the AI retrieves pertinent documentaries while discussing essential concepts on the TV.

In the meantime, you’re organizing next month’s holiday, inquiring about ticket costs and city attractions in Barcelona. Subsequently, your friend may employ it to study guitar chords for a new pastime, with Gemini showing chord diagrams and instruction videos.

This isn’t just another AI helper. Google wants the TV to be the centre of your digital life. Alexa took over kitchens, Siri lives in your pocket, but Google is betting the big screen in your living room is the real gateway for AI.

One concern for longtime Google TV users is whether Gemini replaces the traditional Google Assistant integration. According to Google, the answer is no.

Commands like “turn down the volume,” “open YouTube,” or “what’s the weather?” will continue to work as usual. Gemini is layered on top, not swapped in. That means users get the best of both worlds: familiar voice commands plus the intelligence of a modern conversational AI.

What’s Next for Gemini on TV

The rollout is starting small, with select TCL models, but Google has big plans. Over the next year, Gemini will land on:

  • Google TV Streamer
  • Walmart onn 4K Pro
  • 2025 Hisense U7, U8, and UX models
  • 2025 TCL QM7K, QM8K, and X11K models

Google also teased “more functionality over time,” meaning deeper integrations with smart home devices, more personalised recommendations, or even the ability to generate interactive content directly on the big screen.

This development signals a fundamental shift in how we think about television. Traditional TV’s passive consumption model gives way to interactive, intelligent experiences in which the screen becomes a portal to information, education, and assistance.

Google’s new features put much pressure on other smart TV brands like Samsung and LG. While these companies have experimented with AI features, they haven’t matched Google’s conversational AI capabilities. As a result, Amazon’s Fire TV devices seem less attractive than Google TV, which can answer complex questions and hold natural conversations.

As Google continues rolling out Gemini across its massive installed base of smart TVs throughout 2025, millions of families will get their first taste of conversational AI in their homes. Whether this transforms the living room into a collaborative learning space or makes it easier to find something everyone wants to watch, one thing is sure: the future of television just got a whole lot smarter.

The revolution will be televised, and AI will power it.
