India AI Summit 2026 Marks India’s Shift in Global AI

Girish Vidhani

The India AI Summit 2026 was one of the largest AI gatherings in the Global South that it has ever seen. The Event was held from February 16 to 20, 2026, at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The five-day event has attracted more than 250,000 visitors from 20+ states across the country, as well as the majority of tech CEOs worldwide. With this event, India positioned itself as a force of artificial intelligence; not just as a market, but as a builder, rule-shaper, and deployment hub for the Global South.

Rather than just product launches and flashy demos, the summit emphasized heavily on the compute, capital, governance, talent, and long-term AI infrastructure. Very soon, India will make major investment announcements alongside policy signaling, while top tech leaders and regulators are ready to leverage the stage to debate how AI should scale responsibly.

Let’s look at some of the major announcements from the India AI Impact Summit 2026, in no particular order.

  • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the summit, emphasizing India’s large youth population, tech talent, and the country’s vision to democratize AI as a tool for inclusion and empowerment.
  • India earmarks $1.1 billion for a state-backed AI venture capital fund. The fund will be utilized by AI and advanced manufacturing startups in India. The government is serious and ready to take action to step up the AI game.
  • The AI Impact Expo opens with 300+ exhibitors from 30 countries. The five-day event covered every sector, from agriculture to defence, and drew a crowd that the event extended for one more day, till February 21.
  • Global leaders from more than 100 countries attended the event. These leaders focused on themes such as AI for social good, ethical frameworks, and public-private collaboration.
  • Sarvam AI launches Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B; India’s most powerful homegrown LLMs yet. Developed using the MOE (mixture-of-experts) architecture, the models are open-source and built to compete with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Sarvam even announced Kaze, the first-of-its-kind AI smart glasses made in India. PM tested the product itself, and it will be available to the public from May 2026.
  • The government outlined India’s “whole-of-nation” AI strategy, with plans to build a common compute infrastructure by integrating 20,000+ GPUs to expand the current IndiaAI Compute Portal and support local research and model training capacity.
  • Adani announced an investment of $100 billion in AI data centres, backed by renewed energy. The company announced that the investment will drive $150 billion+ in downstream spending on server manufacturing, sovereign cloud, and advanced electrical infrastructure across India by 2035.
  • The India AI summit has set a Guinness World Record for registering the maximum pledges of 250,000+ from participants across the globe for the AI responsibility campaign.
  • JioHotstar stated that the company will now integrate ChatGPT to help users with content exploration. India’s biggest streaming platform will be ready to integrate OpenAI’s models to help users discover great content through natural language, benefiting a wide range of people worldwide.
  • Tech giant Microsoft pledged significant investments in AI infrastructure and equitable access through a $50 billion plan, especially in growing markets, with India as a strategic focus.
  • Blackstone purchases a massive stake in Indian AI Startup Neysa in a $600 million round. Various other venture capital firms, including Venture Growth, Nexus Venture Partners, TVS Capital, and 360 ONE Asset, have also participated. Neysa plans to gain another $600 million in debt and deploy 20,000+ GPUs. The world’s leading investment firm is finally taking India’s AI infrastructure ambitions seriously.
  • UNESCO amplified calls for ethical, human-centered AI that protects rights and builds trust across societies; a key theme resonant throughout the summit.
  • A group of 80+ countries signed the “Delhi Declaration for Democratic AI”, promoting ethical AI, controllable access, and beneficial applications of AI worldwide.
  • Global firms announced billions in targeted spend: Google’s $15 billion foundational AI infrastructure plans in India. On the other hand, Microsoft decided to invest $50 billion in data centers and training to upskill 20 million Indians by 2030.
  • Sam Altman stated that there are more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users in India. That makes India the second-largest ChatGPT market globally, just after the US, with Indians holding the charts for the most active student users.
  • Altman and Amodei refuse to hold hands, and the internet loses it. When Modi invited leaders onstage for a show of unity, every executive except OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei obliged, settling for an awkward fist-bump. The photo went viral within minutes, their rivalry suddenly visible to the entire world on live television.
  • Demis Hassabis warns the world: AGI could arrive within five to eight years. The Google DeepMind CEO stated that we are at a genuine “threshold moment,” describing today’s AI as “jagged intelligences,” brilliant in some domains, unpredictable in others,  and called for urgent global cooperation on safety frameworks before that threshold is crossed.

The India AI Summit 2026 ended on a high note, spotlighting India’s growing technology ecosystem and emerging role as a global policy leader in artificial intelligence.

From record investment commitments and landmark partnerships to sovereign model launches and multilateral governance pledges involving tech giants and governments, the summit sent a clear message: India does not want to be merely a market for AI. Instead, the country aims to play a central role in building, shaping, and governing the next generation of AI technologies. Many of these initiatives are expected to take shape in the months and years ahead.
