OpenAI chose the advent calendar approach to make its AI updates more “in-season” and exciting. On December 04th, the company announced its “12 weekday – 12 AI updates plan” on X (formerly Twitter), as shown below.
OpenAI started it off the very next day, on December 05th, with the launch of a new model, OpenAI o1, and a new premium tier – ChatGPT Pro. To explain it further:
ChatGPT Pro
ChatGPT Pro is the paid tier added to the existing pricing models. It costs $200/month and allows complete access to all the OpenAI models, including the latest OpenAI o1.
This paid tier is exclusively designed for the extensive ChatGPT users who regularly access the advanced tool for research purposes.
The new ChatGPT pro utilizes its most advanced AI model to provide more reliable and error-free output for complex real-world questions. Users will also get to use the advanced voice capabilities with ChatGPT Pro.
o1 OpenAI Model
OpenAI o1 was initially launched in September as o1 Preview, during which developers gathered users’ input and performance data to identify key improvement scopes before its launch in December.
o1 was launched as a faster, more advanced GPT model. Being the recently added top AI model, it automatically self-evaluates the facts while generating the output to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
Another popular demand curbed by this new launch was multimodal AI. With the new o1 model, ChatGPT can capably handle multi-media input, including hand-drawn images that further extend its capabilities.

Along with this, OpenAI also announced a grant program for researchers wherein it will award 10 free subscriptions to medical researchers. The main aim of this program is to assist crucial research with the unmatched potential of their advanced models.
